How to choose the ideal musical instrument for your child?

19/11/2025

Choosing a child's first musical instrument is an important step in their artistic journey. At Interartes, we often meet parents who ask us which instrument is most suitable for beginners, especially between ages 6 and 10. While there is no single answer — every child is unique — there are several criteria that can help guide the decision.

The child's personality

How a child expresses themselves can hint at the instrument that best suits them: Energetic children may feel more motivated by drums or percussion.More introspective students often enjoy piano or string instruments.Children who love singing or storytelling tend to connect with voice or melodic instruments such as violin or guitar.

Physical size and coordination

It's important to choose an instrument that fits the child's body:

  • Guitars, violins and basses are available in smaller sizes.

  • For piano, adjusting the bench height is usually enough.

  • Drums require some initial coordination, but this can be developed from an early age.

Musical interests

Ask what the child likes to listen to — it can be decisive. Even if they begin with a "more common" instrument, nothing prevents them from exploring other styles or instruments later.

Trying before choosing

At Interartes, we offer diagnostic sessions and trial lessons that allow children to:

  • Try different instruments

  • Observe their natural response

  • Receive pedagogical guidance from teachers

Support and progress

Regardless of the chosen instrument, the most important factor is creating a positive environment that motivates the child to keep learning. Our structured learning process — with continuous assessment, public performances and personalised guidance — ensures that each student progresses at their own pace, with confidence and enthusiasm.
